OLYMPIA DUKAKIS TO JOIN SHAKESPEARE SANTA CRUZ ARTISTIC DIRECTOR MARCO BARRICELLI IN A BENEFIT PERFORMANCE

Santa Cruz, CA – Award-winning actress Olympia Dukakis will be joining Shakespeare Santa Cruz Artistic Director Marco Barricelli in an upcoming Benefit Performance at the Heritage Theatre in Campbell, California. Proceeds will benefit Shakespeare Santa Cruz, a non-profit professional repertory theatre company in residence at the UC Santa Cruz, and will support the organization's continuing efforts in bringing its audiences high-quality professional theatre showcasing the talents of nationally-recognized artists, both on stage and behind the scenes.

Mr. Barricelli, who took the artistic reins of Shakespeare Santa Cruz in January, has worked with Ms. Dukakis before and welcomes the reunion. “It’s a great honor to have an actor of her caliber be interested in helping the cause of furthering theatre in America in general, and Shakespeare Santa Cruz in particular.”

Ms. Dukakis is a veteran of the stage and screen as well as a director, producer and teacher. Her broad talents are reflected in the numerous award-winning performances and nominations, garnering her Emmy, OBIE, Film Critic, ACE Cable, BAFTA and Academy Award recognition. Her performance as the sardonic Italian mother in Norman Jewison’s Moonstruck in 1987 earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Recent films include 2007’s award-winning Away From Her, while her stage performances in the one-woman show Rose have had critics applauding from London to New York since it premiered in 1999.

For the Benefit Performance, Ms. Dukakis and Mr. Barricelli will be reprising their roles from Canadian playwright Michel Tremblay’s homage to his late mother, For the Pleasure of Seeing Her Again, which they performed together at ACT in San Francisco in 2002. The artists will perform selected readings from the play and Ms. Dukakis will then engage the audience in an informal Q&A moderated by Mr. Barricelli. Gold Circle patrons will also enjoy a post-performance reception with the artists.

Being a dedicated theatre artist and having performed in over 130 regional theatre productions in her career to date, Ms. Dukakis is delighted to support the efforts of Shakespeare Santa Cruz and its new Artistic Director. "It doesn't get better than Marco Barricelli -- consummate actor, teacher and Shakespearean scholar. What a great match - Marco Barricelli and Shakepeare Santa Cruz."

Shakespeare Santa Cruz presents its 27th season with William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and All’s Well That Ends Well, Burn This by Lanford Wilson, and Bach at Leipzig by Itamar Moses. All four plays will be performed in repertory from July 15 through August 31, 2008.
