Dear Friends,
You have been heard. Shakespeare Santa Cruz will live. Professional theater will once again grace our redwoods. Thousands of you, locally, nationally and even globally, opened your hearts and helped us meet this challenge. We now have the financial reserve necessary to make SSC financially sustainable. You have proved that words matter, ideas matter, art matters, and yes, numbers matter. We thank you - profusely and profoundly.
But your work and ours is far from done. We at SSC must now mount a reduced season on a reduced budget with reduced staffing while attaining the level of artistic excellence for which we are nationally recognized. This being SSC, we will do just that, and make the Bard proud. Your overwhelming support has given us the breathing space we need to execute new ticket sales and organizational effectiveness strategies, to involve ourselves more meaningfully in our local, UCSC and national communities, and to advance our professional theater mission.
When a theater, library, school, museum, ballet, opera or music festival is threatened with extinction, we all need to act. We must find the bigger picture, keep our eye on the future. Just as Shakespeare’s plays have inspired audiences in the redwood Glen, we hope SSC’s story will inspire other arts organizations to adapt and survive with their missions intact. We look forward to hearing your story.
Our shortened season runs from July 21 to August 30, 2009. We’ll need you to buy tickets to see one of Shakespeare’s most endearing comedies, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and the edgy, political tragedy, Julius Caesar, both performing in the Glen. And don’t forget our Bay Area premiere of the family-friendly Shipwrecked! An Entertainment - The Amazing Adventures of Louis de Rougemont (As Told by Himself) by Pulitzer-prize winning playwright Donald Margulies, to be performed on the indoor Mainstage Theatre. We look forward to welcoming you this summer!
