Shakespeare In the Classroom

Each summer, take advantage of a variety of Shakespeare-inspired classes being offered by UCSC, Cabrillo College and community classrooms around the county.

Cabrillo College:

Understanding Shakespeare with William Mowatt
Cabrillo College Extension • June 18 - July 19 • Wednesdays • 6:30 PM - 9:30 PM
We will explore the theses, characters, and plots through video clips, guest speakers from the Shakespeare Santa Cruz productions, and lively class discussion.

Performing Arts Attendance with Phil Collins (MUS 85Z)
Cabrillo College Summer Session • July 15 - August 5 • Tuesdays • 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM   Develops critical and listening skills and enhances the appreciation of Santa Cruz cultural events such as Cabrillo Stage, Cabrillo Contemporary Festival of Music and Shakespeare Santa Cruz.


UC Santa Cruz:

Introduction to Shakespeare with Margo Hendricks •  July 28 - August 29 • Tue Thu • 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm
Study of representative plays. No previous experience with Shakespeare is assumed.
This course will be integrated with the Shakespeare Santa Cruz productions of Romeo and Juliet and All’s Well That Ends Well. Students are required to attend performances. 

Representations of Hamlet  with E. Sloan-Pace • June 23 - July 25 • Mon Wed Fri • 10:00 am - 12:30 pm  Examination of Shakespeare's Hamlet from various perspectives, including as a literary and historical object, and as a mirror of socio-political concerns. Readings include both precursors to Shakespeare and modern adaptations and revisions of the Hamlet story. Satisfies the English and Pre- and Early Modern concentrations; also satisfies the Pre- and Early Modern distribution requirement.

Philosophical Shakespeare  with Geza Kallay •  June 23 - July 25 • Tue Thu • 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm
In-depth analysis of philosophical aspects of Shakespeare's plays, including those performed at the Shakespeare Santa Cruz festival in the summer of 2008. Prerequisite(s): PHIL 091, 093, or 094.

Acting and Shakespeare with Mike Ryan •  June 23 - August 29 • Tue Thu • 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Challenges of performing Shakespearean and Renaissance plays are explored through confronting the acting problems they pose. Attention to verse scansion, character analysis, and textual meaning. Strategies for enacting scenes and monologues are tested in class presentations.

Shakespeare Santa Cruz: Writing in Response to the Bard with Sarah-Hope Parmeter •  July 28 - August 29 • Tue Wed Thu • 9:00 am - 11:30 am
Uses writing to respond to Shakespeare Santa Cruz's summer productions. Requires frequent assignments, such as reviews, interviews, performance notes, comparisons of productions, background pieces, and reflective essays. Students regularly revise work in response to instructor and peer feedback. Prerequisite(s): Satisfaction of the Entry Level Writing and Composition requirements. Enrollment limited.
