What Is Shakespeare to Go?
Shakespeare to Go is a program started by Shakespeare Santa Cruz in 1988 in collaboration with the UCSC Theater Arts Department. Every year, a Theater Arts faculty member casts and directs a 50-minute version of one of the plays featured by SSC in the upcoming summer season. This year, we will be offering Love's Labor's Lost, cast and directed by past SSC Artist Director Danny Scheie.
Danny has been acting and directing all over the West Coast in the last year – at Berkeley Rep, Campo Santo and the Old Globe. Winter quarter is spent with the UCSC student actors rehearsing the play and preparing for the spring quarter when the performance tours schools in Santa Cruz, Monterey, and Santa Clara Counties.
Special thanks to Toyota of Santa Cruz for the donation of the Shakespeare to Go touring van.
Ferdinand, King of Navarre, opens the play by declaring that his court will be devoted to ascetic study for three years—and, to keep the distractions to a minimum, no women will be allowed within a mile of the court. This pledge is all but shattered with the arrival of the Princess of France and her feminine entourage. And so begins Love’s Labor’s Lost, full of marvelous language and strongly drawn comic characters.
