What Is Shakespeare to Go?
Shakespeare to Go is a program started by Shakespeare Santa Cruz in 1988 in collaboration with the UCSC Theater Arts Department. Every year, a Theater Arts faculty member casts and directs a 50-minute version of one of the plays featured by SSC in the upcoming summer season. This year, we will be offering A Midsummer Night's Dream, cast and directed by SSC core company member Mike Ryan. His 2008 roles were Graupner in Bach at Leipzig, the Translator in All's Well that Ends Well, and Toad in The Wind in the Willows. Winter quarter is spent with the UCSC student actors rehearsing the play and preparing for the spring quarter when the performance tours schools in Santa Cruz, Monterey, and Santa Clara Counties.
Local & National Funding Make It Happen
Shakespeare to Go's productions are part of Shakespeare for a New Generation, a national initiative sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts in cooperation with Arts Midwest.
Funding from the NEA/Arts Midwest, as well as the Monterey Peninsula Foundation Youth Fund and Granite Construction, enables us to keep the artistic quality of the productions high as well as the cost of bringing the production to the schools affordable.

Special thanks to Toyota of Santa Cruz for the donation of the Shakespeare to Go touring van.

Bringing Shakespeare to Your Classroom
Educators may book a performance of Shakespeare to Go by calling SSC Administration and Education Coordinator Sara Wilbourne at 831.459.5810 or email her at srwilbou@ucsc.edu. Each school will be provided curriculum materials as part of the performance package.
The Shakespeare to Go touring schedule is often fully booked well in advance. If you are unable to book a performance this season, you can still bring Shakespeare into your classroom. Educational materials, which include a CD and video as well as a Curriculum Guide on the Elizabethan theater and the life of William Shakespeare, are offered free by the NEA. Simply go to www.shakespeareinamericancommunities.org and explore the options!
Upon request, SSC is happy to provide you with a Curriculum Guide designed specifically for 2009's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Contact Sara Wilbourne at 831.459.5810 or at srwilbou@ucsc.edu.
